
Sydney to Welcome SailGP in 2026
The much-anticipated SailGP event will return to Sydney in February 2026, drawing sailing enthusiasts and showcasing world-class athleticism on the iconic Sydney Harbour.
The New South Wales (NSW) Government has successfully negotiated the return of SailGP, solidifying Sydney’s status as a premier destination for this thrilling competition.
SailGP will feature advanced foiling catamarans racing in the stunning natural amphitheater that is Sydney Harbour, marking it as one of the most thrilling locations for the championship.
Steve Kamper, NSW Minister of Jobs and Tourism, stated: “Sydney is one of the world’s great sporting stages, and there’s no better backdrop for SailGP than our spectacular harbour. We’re proud to support the return of this world-class event in 2026, welcoming the globe’s top sailing teams back to where it all began. With tens of millions watching from around the world, SailGP not only showcases the thrill of elite sport but also shines a global spotlight on our city’s natural beauty and visitor appeal.”
Originally initiated in Sydney in 2019, SailGP has since evolved into a major global event, now on the NSW Government’s roster of significant events.
Sailing alongside elite cities
Sydney will join other major global locations such as New York and Rio de Janeiro in hosting the sixth season of SailGP, with competing teams from Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland and the United States.
Sir Russel Coutts, Chief Executive of SailGP, emphasized: “We’ve had unprecedented interest from cities around the world, SailGP is excited to release a first preview of what fans can expect from the 2026 Season, including the return of some of the most iconic race stadium destinations on the calendar. We had our very first event in Sydney Harbour in 2019 and the venue consistently delivers some of the most thrilling racing on the SailGP calendar every year.”
The two-day event is expected to attract thousands of visitors to the harbour, supported by various media opportunities and fan activations, providing a boost to the local economy and tourism.
Since 2021, SailGP has been broadcast worldwide from Sydney, garnering substantial viewer interest, with the previous event drawing a TV audience of over 21 million.
