The Japan Convention Bureau has announced that Ehime Prefecture will host the VELO-CITY World Cycling Summit in 2027, marking a historic first for Japan.
Ehime’s successful bid was substantially aided by a site visit from the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) in December, showcasing the region’s natural beauty and the renowned Shimanami Kaido cycling path, as well as its robust cycling infrastructure initiatives.
An honor and an unprecedented opportunity
Governor Tokihiro Nakamura expressed pride in this achievement and highlighted the potential benefits for cycling not only in Japan but across Asia. Nakamura remarked:
“This honor will greatly contribute to improving the cycling environment in Japan and thus in Asia at large, as hosting the world’s biggest cycling event here in Japan will also help people learn more about the cycling policies that are being created in Europe. Bicycles are not only a sustainable means of transportation but are also a wonderful way to build health, create a sense of purpose in life and form new friendships.”
ECF’s CEO Jill Warren also celebrated the collaboration opportunity with Ehime, emphasizing that the region stands as a model for integrating cycling into daily life while supporting broader sustainable goals.
