The Manila Hotel Unveils Manuel Baldemor’s ‘Kuwaresma’ Exhibition
The Manila Hotel held the opening reception for Kuwaresma, a solo exhibition by acclaimed Filipino painter, sculptor, writer, and illustrator Manuel Baldemor on Sunday, April 13th. The exhibition is currently on display at the hotel’s Art Gallery and presents a contemplative visual journey through the sacred season of Lent.
Kuwaresma showcases Baldemor’s vibrant color palette, intricate details, and deeply symbolic compositions which bring Filipino religious rituals and traditions to life. The term reflects a localized version of the Spanish word for Lent, Cuaresma, encapsulating the essence of the 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and reflection that mirrors Christ’s time in the desert. The exhibition will be available for viewing until April 30th.
A Vivid Act of Faith Manuel Baldemor is renowned for his unique integration of folk art, religious themes, and cultural narratives. This collection of 38 pieces delves into the solemnity and meaning behind Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. Baldemor expressed, “As a painter and sculptor, I aim to capture the essence of Filipino life and customs, especially during Holy Week. Kuwaresma is a culmination of my fascination with Lenten folk rituals, particularly the Nazareno procession, which continues to humble and inspire me.”
