A quiet revolution is unfolding in how India travels. Indian travelers are increasingly seeking deep cultural experiences rather than visiting common tourist spots. Recent data shows that between May 1 and June 30 this year, outbound hotel bookings have dramatically shifted towards Japan, particularly to Kyoto and Osaka. Bookings in Kyoto have surged by 184%, while Osaka has seen a remarkable 195% increase. Meanwhile, Tokyo, although still popular, recorded a 91% rise in hotel bookings.
Global Travel Trends
This trend reflects a broader desire for immersive cultural experiences over tech-driven attractions. Notably, countries such as France, Germany, and Switzerland are witnessing double-digit growth in hotel bookings from India. Unexpectedly, Almaty, Kazakhstan, reported a 602% surge, benefiting from easier visa policies and direct flights.
Conversely, classic destinations like New York have fallen out of favor, noting a 47% drop in bookings from Indian travelers. With emerging locations gaining traction, Vietnam has also seen an impressive 351% rise in hotel bookings, while Japan recorded a growth of 212%.
Domestic Travel Growth
On the home front, domestic travel remains vibrant with bookings up 55% from last summer, particularly in tier-2 cities. Ahmedabad has experienced an unprecedented 8,300% increase, powered by enhanced air connectivity. Travelers are shifting their focus towards less-explored areas of their own country.
