Hong Kong Disneyland Celebrates Earth Month with Innovative Sustainability Efforts
Hong Kong Disneyland is adopting groundbreaking ecological initiatives during Earth Month, emphasizing their commitment to sustainability in operations.
For this year’s observance of Earth Month throughout April, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) showcases its ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability.
HKDL remains steadfast in its dedication to renewable energy and has recently made innovative strides by transforming a vintage ride to operate on electric power, launching Hong Kong’s first and largest car park solar canopy, and implementing AI technology for energy efficiency.
Efforts are set to continue, with the solar power system expanding into the World of Frozen, reinforcing its commitment to eco-friendly practices.
These efforts, recognized by industry awards, place HKDL as a frontrunner in promoting a sustainable future.
Tim Sypko, HKDL’s Senior Vice President for Operations, stated: “HKDL’s enchantment has positively influenced Hong Kong’s tourism, economy, and community over two decades. As a socially responsible entity, we strive to positively impact the world while growing our operations. This includes undertaking meaningful actions to support a healthier planet.”
Main Street Goes Electric
The theme park is dedicated to meaningful actions that contribute to a sustainable future.
To blend innovation with nostalgia, HKDL is now utilizing clean energy for its taxi rides. The well-loved Main Street Taxi, part of Main Street USA, has been converted to electric power by replacing its gas engine and hydraulic transmission with electric systems. This change minimizes waste through modifications to existing vehicles.
The electric Main Street Taxi maintains its classic appearance reminiscent of early 1900s horseless carriages while featuring an onboard audio system that imitates the sound of gas engines, enhancing the nostalgic experience for visitors and improving air quality.
Introducing Hong Kong’s First Solar Power Canopy Car Park
This year also marks a significant milestone for HKDL in adopting clean energy. The resort proudly launched Hong Kong’s first and largest solar power canopy at its cast member parking area, featuring nearly 200 bi-facial solar panels and providing shelter for 40 car parking spaces in the first phase.
The project will unfold in two phases, with the second phase expected to double the number of panels to nearly 400, covering 80 parking spaces. This system is anticipated to generate more than 200,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually.
Additionally, HKDL has introduced an AI Digital Twin model for its district cooling air-conditioning systems, utilizing AI analytics to forecast cooling loads and virtually simulate operations. This technology optimizes performance while reducing energy use and carbon emissions.
