American Airlines Trials International Remote Baggage Screening with Customs

American Airlines and CBP aim to enhance the passenger travel experience by removing the need for travelers to re-check their luggage upon arrival.

American Airlines and U.S. Customs and Border Protection are working together to enhance the travel experience by streamlining baggage processes. They are introducing a pilot program to eliminate the need for travelers to re-check their luggage on arrival from international flights.

International Remote Baggage Screening (IRBS)

This new procedure enables passengers flying from Sydney to Los Angeles to bypass the luggage pickup and directly proceed to the TSA checkpoint, making the travel experience more efficient. During this trial run, luggage will undergo remote screening, ensuring compliance without compromising passenger convenience.

“As part of our innovation efforts in air travel, CBP is leveraging technology to enhance baggage inspections to further secure and streamline travel,” said Diane J. Sabatino, acting executive assistant commissioner for the Office of Field Operations at CBP.

If successful, the IRBS could extend to more flights and airports, reinforcing the CBP’s ongoing modernization initiatives aimed at improving security measures and traveler experiences.
