Colin Kerr Discusses the Secrets Behind Engaging Entertainment at Sea

The success of a cruise is increasingly tied to the entertainment options available for passengers, according to Colin Kerr.

Onboard entertainment is crucial for a memorable cruise experience. Colin Kerr, assistant vice-president at StarCruises, emphasizes that the key to engaging entertainment lies in its energy and variety.

“As times change and we keep getting new generations coming, we’ve had to increase what we do. That’s why we make our shows a lot more energetic and diverse.”
Translation: As time progresses and new generations board, we adapt our entertainment to be more vibrant and diverse.

Kerr notes that the upcoming maiden voyage of the Star Voyager will feature five nights packed with activities, ranging from musical nights in the Lobby to world-class performances at the Zodiac Theatre.

For older generations, such as baby boomers and Gen X, the cruise experience was often synonymous with a slower pace and relaxed entertainment. Kerr recalls,

“Most thought that cruises were places for old people to go, and they would take their book on and settle down on a deckchair.”
Translation: In the past, many considered cruises tranquil retreats for the elderly, often spent reading a book on deck.

However, contemporary cruises must accommodate younger passengers who favor dynamic and diverse entertainment options.

Kerr adds,

“Attention spans are a little bit shorter now. We have to offer a lot more variety and have people moving around, so that’s what we’re doing now.”
Translation: With shorter attention spans today, we focus on providing more variety and encouraging movement among our guests.

Moreover, Kerr shares that language barriers are minimized during performances, as the emphasis is on music rather than spoken word, catering to a multicultural audience.

In today’s world, engaging onboard entertainment not only entertains but also creates Instagram-worthy moments, appealing to the social media-savvy Gen Z travelers.

Kerr states,

“Gen Z love Instagram and social media. So we have to make everything that we’re showing on stage an Instagrammable moment.”
Translation: Today’s younger audience thrives on social media; hence, we aim to provide experiences that are shareable and visually striking.
