Japan Approves New Accommodation Taxes in Eleven Areas

The Japanese government has sanctioned new accommodation taxes in eleven locations to bolster its tourism industry and alleviate overtourism issues.

The Japanese government has approved the implementation of accommodation taxes in nine cities and two prefectures, with the initiative set to begin in autumn this year. This move aims to tackle challenges posed by overtourism and support the tourism industry after the pandemic.

Minister Seiichiro Murakami endorsed the tax for various locations, including Miyagi and Hiroshima prefectures, along with several cities across Hokkaido, Gifu, and others.

The new tax rates will vary from 100 to 500 yen per night, depending on local government decisions. In a notable case, Kyoto plans to charge as much as 10,000 yen nightly due to the high levels of overtourism it experiences. Shizuoka Prefecture also intends to enforce a tax in Atami starting next month, while other areas will follow suit in November.

“Revenue generated from these taxes will assist in addressing the issues of overtourism,” said officials.

Details of New Tax:

  • Implementation Begin: Fall 2025
  • Tax Rate: 100 to 10,000 yen per night
  • Local Government Involved: 24 local governments have received approval

This move highlights a growing focus on sustainable tourism practices within Japan.
