Delta Collaborates with JetZero to Innovate Air Travel Sustainability

Delta Air Lines is partnering with JetZero, a pioneering start-up, to develop a groundbreaking aircraft that promises to revolutionize air travel with 50% greater fuel efficiency. This innovative blended-wing-body (BWB) design is a crucial part of Delta’s ongoing efforts to optimize industry practices and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The partnership signifies a notable commitment by Delta, following its 100th anniversary celebration, to redefine the future of aviation for generations to come. The collaboration arose after JetZero secured a grant from the U.S. Air Force in 2023 to create a full-scale prototype, expected to take flight in 2027.

“Working with JetZero to realize an entirely new airframe… is bold and important work to advance the airline industry’s fuel-saving initiatives and innovation goals,” said Amelia DeLuca, Chief Sustainability Officer at Delta.

Additionally, the partnership allows Delta to leverage its extensive operational expertise to further develop this cutting-edge technology. JetZero’s aircraft is designed to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and integrate seamlessly into existing airport operations, showcasing advancements that could drastically lower lifecycle carbon emissions.

This collaboration marks Delta’s fourth strategic initiative in its Sustainability Roadmap, enhancing fuel efficiency standards while maintaining a superior passenger experience through innovative aircraft design.

“JetZero is working to change the world… the ability to realize such significant efficiency gains… will serve as the foundation on which other technologies can be realized,” remarked JetZero CEO Tom O’Leary.

The new aircraft will accommodate over 250 passengers while being significantly quieter than current models and expected to set a new standard for aviation sustainability.
