The Decommissioned Philippine Navy Vessel Set to Become a Tourist Attraction

The decommissioned Philippine Navy vessel BRP Rizal (PS-74) will soon be transformed into the latest tourist attraction in the Southern Philippines. Dinagat Islands Governor Nilo Demerey Jnr announced on March 24 that he has secured approval for the vessel’s transfer, which had been pending since October 2022.

Background of the Vessel

Originally called USS Murrelet (AM-372), this vessel was constructed during the Second World War. It served in the Korean War before being handed over to the Philippines in 1965 under a US military assistance program. The vessel was officially decommissioned in January 2020.

Future Plans

Governor Demerey mentioned, “We’re scheduled to meet Philippine Navy officials this week to process the transfer documents.” Upon transfer, the vessel is expected to serve as a floating museum, hotel, and educational facility catering to both local and international tourists.

Demerey expressed gratitude saying, “The people of Dinagat are grateful to both US and Philippine administrations for this approval.”
