Malaysia Aviation Group Acquires 30 New Boeing Aircraft
Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) announced the acquisition of 30 new aircraft directly from The Boeing Company on March 21. This new order is part of MAG’s fleet modernization strategy, including 18 Boeing 737-8 and 12 Boeing 737-10 aircraft powered by CFM International LEAP-1B engines, with options for an additional 30 aircraft.
A commemorative ceremony marking the acquisition was graced by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya. Currently, MAG operates a fleet of 113 aircraft, comprising 42 Boeing 737-800s under Malaysia Airlines and five under Firefly.
Strategic Update
This acquisition reinforces MAG’s competitive edge in the aviation sector and aims to boost regional connectivity across important markets. Notably, the Boeing 737-10 will introduce lie-flat business class seats, enhancing the travel experience on regional routes.
With these new jets, MAG plans to phase out older models, targeting a modernized fleet of 55 Boeing 737-8 and 737-10 aircraft by 2030.
Izham Ismail, MAG’s group managing director, emphasized the significance of this order, stating, “The Boeing 737 has been a cornerstone of our fleet since 1969… By balancing operational needs with an elevated travel experience, we are strengthening our commitment to delivering seamless and enjoyable journeys for our passengers.”
This move reflects a bold step in securing MAG’s future, allowing for greater adaptability and competitiveness in the evolving market landscape.
