Heathrow Airport Faces Major Disruption Following Electrical Fire

Major Disruption at Heathrow Airport

All arrival and departure flights to London Heathrow Airport were canceled for 24 hours due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying power to the airport. Heathrow remained closed until 23:59 on March 21. Below are the details from Cirium:

    • The airport was expected to handle 665 departures, representing over 145,094 seats.
    • Additionally, 669 flights were scheduled to arrive, totaling 145,836 seats.
    • In total, Heathrow expected over 1,330 flights today, carrying about 291,000 passengers.
    • British Airways led the share of flights from the airport at 51%, followed by Virgin Atlantic and Lufthansa.

Updates:

  • 100 inbound flights were redirected to other airports on March 21 due to the closure.
  • All remaining flights were scrapped.
  • This weekend, more than 2,520 departures and arrivals were planned, equivalent to 557,488 seats.
  • Flights were split with 1,219 on Saturday (271,677 seats) and 1,301 on Sunday (285,811 seats).
