Northern Philippine Villages Thrive Through Tourism Growth

Increasing tourism is positively impacting villages in the Cordilleras, enhancing community engagement and cultural preservation.

The recent initiatives by the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) have significantly enhanced tourism in the Northern Philippines, particularly in the Cordilleras. Villages here are increasingly becoming sought-after destinations for cultural and ecotourism, attracting visitors eager to experience serene natural settings.

Previously, La Diyang Haven in Tuba, Benguet was the sole eco-tourism site in the area, creating partnerships with adjacent attractions for a comprehensive tourism experience.

Cristina Tolero, head of La Diyang Haven, stated:

“We offer loop tourism service so that there will be more activities for the visitors and more of us will benefit apart from sharing our practices.”

The collective tourism offerings allow guests to immerse themselves in nature, enjoying experiences such as walking through virgin forests and savoring organically grown meals. Cultural presentations featuring traditional Ibaloi dancers are organized for tourists.

DOT Regional Director Jovita Ganongan praised the locals’ acceptance of tourism, noting that the aspiration to identify The Best Tourism Village encourages indigenous peoples in the region to showcase their unique cultures. While varied attractions exist across the region, sustainable tourism hinges on community acceptance and readiness to welcome tourists.

Ganongan emphasized:

“The issue of acceptance and opening up is already addressed in the search because it is the community members themselves that come out and say they are ready to accept outsiders and show the beauty of their places.”

By embracing tourism, these villages not only enhance their local economy but also preserve and promote their cultural heritage.
