Japan Sees a Record 16.9% Rise in Foreign Tourist Arrivals in February

Japan's tourist arrivals surpassed three million for the first time in February 2025, showcasing significant growth in international tourism.

The Japan Tourism Organisation (JTO) reports that an estimated 3,258,100 foreign visitors arrived in February 2025, marking a 16.9% increase from February 2024. This increase indicates the first time that the total has exceeded three million for this month in history.

Key Highlights:

  • The growth in tourist numbers is attributed to a 57.3% rise in visitors from China during the Lunar New Year holiday.
  • Additionally, there was an increase in flights between China and Japan.

Visitor Breakdown:

  • South Korean visitors totaled 847,300, showing a 3.5% year-on-year increase.
  • 191,500 visitors from the United States, an increase of 28.8%.
  • 88,800 visitors from Australia, an increase of 33.5%.

In terms of outbound travel, the number of Japanese nationals traveling overseas rose by 20.7% compared to February 2024, though these figures still lag behind pre-pandemic levels, driven in part by rising costs and a weaker yen.
