Ongoing Enhancements at Philippine National Railways Improve Bicol Region Stations

Philippine National Railways is undertaking significant station upgrades in the Bicol Region to enhance accessibility and safety.

Officials from the Philippine National Railways (PNR) announced that ongoing station upgrades, particularly in the Bicol Region of Southern Luzon, are in progress. These enhancements aim to improve accessibility and ensure safer, faster travel for commuters in the region.

New Facilities

The railway company recently introduced a new PHP 4.9 million station in Pili, Camarines Sur, inaugurated on March 13. It features a long covered platform exceeding 100 meters, tactile pathways for visually impaired individuals, a breastfeeding station, restrooms, and air-conditioned offices for staff.

Inspection and Future Plans

On March 14, PNR General Manager Deovanni Miranda conducted an inspection at several train stations, such as those in Daraga, Travesia, and Camalig, assessing the trains, tracks, and passenger experience firsthand. Miranda commented on the current operations from Naga to Legazpi, emphasizing the need for additional trains despite persistent challenges like Severe Tropical Storm Kristine Trami and a landslide in Quezon.

He confirmed that coaches would be shipped from Manila later this year to expand services. He also highlighted the crucial role of local governments, communities, and educational institutions in raising awareness about railway safety, stating, “We need to inform the public about the risks and dangers associated with rail operations, whether they are residents or merely crossing at railroad intersections. Our goal is to provide sufficient information and education to our community to address these incidents, and moving forward, we are committed to this effort.”
