The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced an impressive attendance of nearly 45 million visitors for the year 2024, marking a 31% increase from the previous year. In December alone, 4.26 million visitors arrived, showcasing an 8% growth year on year.
Notable Performance from Southeast Asian Markets
Visitor numbers from long-haul markets increased by 50% compared to the previous year. Mainland China was the leading source of tourists, contributing approximately 34 million visitors, a 27% rise from last year.
During significant holiday periods such as Lunar New Year, Labour Day, and National Day, visitor numbers showed strong performance. Approximately 10.5 million non-Mainland visitors traveled to Hong Kong in 2024, which represents a 44% increase from the previous year. Increased flight capacities facilitated non-Mainland visitors exceeding one million for two consecutive months in November and December.
The Philippines stood out among short-haul markets, achieving a record total of 1.2 million visitors. Moreover, arrivals from Indonesia and Malaysia rose by 43% and 50% respectively, while Indian visitors increased by over 70% from the previous year.
With the resumption of flights to long-haul destinations, visitor numbers from regions such as the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe also rose by more than 50%. Notably, Canada and Australia saw excellent performance in the fourth quarter.
Half of all incoming visitors were overnight tourists, enjoying high satisfaction rates.
Dane Cheng, the Executive Director of HKTB, commented:
“Last year, HKTB made a great effort to organise and promote mega events in Hong Kong, while enhancing the visitor experience. We also launched various promotions targeting different markets…”
He added, “With new measures announced by the Central Government, HKTB is committed to promoting Hong Kong as a leading tourist destination, aiming to attract not only first-time visitors but also those keen on returning.”
