Southwest Airlines Ends Free Checked Baggage Policy for Most Fares

Southwest Airlines has announced the removal of its two free checked bag policy for most fares, marking a significant change in its customer offerings.

After years of commitment to allowing two free checked bags, Southwest Airlines is set to change this policy for most travelers. The airline has made this decision to adapt to current market conditions and bolster revenue.

New Policy Implementation

The change will be effective for flights booked on or after May 28, 2025. Only Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members and Business Select passengers will enjoy the benefit of two free checked bags. Others will only be allowed one free checked bag, subject to size and weight regulations.

“We have tremendous opportunity to meet current and future customer needs, attract new customer segments we don’t compete for today, and return to the levels of profitability that both we and our shareholders expect,” said Bob Jordan, president and CEO of Southwest.

Beginning the same date, Southwest will also introduce a Basic fare option and new expiration terms for flight credits, further reflecting their strategic shift to cater to loyal customers. Users can register for feedback and discussions on this substantial change in FlyerTalk forums.
