Record Surge in Hotel Stays in Japan for 2024

Japan experiences a notable increase in hotel overnight stays amid rising foreign arrivals.

In a report released on Friday, January 31st, the Japan Tourism Agency announced a record increase in overnight accommodations throughout 2024.

The preliminary total number of overnight stays reached 651.49 million, reflecting an increase of 5.5 percent compared to 2023.

This growth is primarily attributed to a surge in foreign arrivals, particularly in hotel and traditional inn bookings. Foreign reservations contributed 163.48 million, marking a 38.8 percent increase, largely due to the weakened yen.

Conversely, domestic reservations saw a decline of 2.3 percent, possibly indicating the end of the domestic tourism growth following the pandemic.
