Málaga Becomes the New Hub of Pop Culture in Europe with San Diego Comic-Con
The iconic San Diego Comic-Con is set to debut in Málaga, marking a historic moment for European pop culture.
For over 50 years, Comic-Con International® has been the definitive event where pop culture comes to life. Now, through an agreement managed by IMG Licensing, SDCC is establishing roots outside the United States for the first time in its history, making its European debut in Málaga, Spain. This historic milestone is made possible thanks to institutional support from the Junta de Andalucía and the Málaga City Council, committed to turning the city into the European capital of pop culture.
San Diego Comic-Con has always been more than just an event; it’s where the future of pop culture is shaped. From September 25 to 28, 2025, Málaga will host the first official licensed convention of San Diego Comic Convention outside the U.S. Fans and creators from around the world will gather in a space designed to inspire, connect, and celebrate, solidifying Europe as a key player in the global history of pop culture.
The international expansion of San Diego Comic Convention was officially announced today at the Gran Hotel Miramar in Málaga, presented by actor Santiago Segura, with participation from notable figures such as Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, President of the Junta de Andalucía, and David Glanzer, Chief Communications & Strategy Officer of SDCC International. “We are very excited to share the unique spirit of Comic-Con with audiences in Europe,” stated Glanzer. Meanwhile, Moreno Bonilla emphasized that this event consolidates Andalucía as a benchmark for digital art and pop culture, supported by its strong local talent.
The Royale Hall of the hotel transformed to accommodate over 200 guests from industries such as film, television, and comics. A highlight was the exhibition of the Infinity Gauntlet, a unique piece valued at over $25 million. The event culminated with a spectacular performance by the 501st Legion, who guided attendees to an exclusive closing cocktail, where they enjoyed a flash mob and the presence of the iconic droid R2D2.
