Loganair Launches Apprenticeship Program for Future Engineers

Loganair opens its apprenticeship scheme aiming to nurture future mechanical engineers in Glasgow and Aberdeen with a structured program that integrates study and hands-on experience.

Loganair has opened applications for its apprenticeship scheme, aiming to recruit mechanical engineers in Glasgow and Aberdeen to enter its four-year modern apprenticeship.

The Loganair Modern Apprentice programme on Aircraft Maintenance (SCQF Level 6) is a four-year structured programme which allows apprentices to receive a salary while studying and undergoing on-the-job training. On completion, each apprentice obtains a UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Part 66 aircraft maintenance licence.

Loganair engineers provide a range of quality maintenance services to support the airline’s fleet, which includes almost 40 aircraft operating across 70 routes. Trainees develop experience across Loganair’s varied fleet types, each of which plays a crucial role in the airline’s mission to connect regions and communities reliably.

Matthew O’Donnell’s Experience

Matthew O’Donnell, 24, from Glasgow, is a recent graduate of the scheme. He expressed appreciation for the hands-on experience and responsibility he was given as an apprentice.

Quote: “The training and mentorship I received gave me a solid foundation for understanding the airline engineering industry. Experienced engineers guiding me through tasks and explaining the reasoning behind specific procedures helped me understand the bigger picture, from safety regulations to the importance of teamwork and communication.”

Rachel McSherry’s Insights

Rachel McSherry, 23, is currently in her second year of training.

Quote: “Learning from supportive colleagues has helped me develop my skills and confidence, especially in problem-solving and teamwork. The apprenticeship is a great way to introduce yourself into the industry where you can learn and work simultaneously.”

Insight from Leadership

Dave Exon, the Chief Technical Officer, shared:

Quote: “Our apprenticeship programme is designed to provide hands-on experience and industry-recognised qualifications, giving aspiring engineers the best possible start to their careers.”

Loganair also trains and employs engineers across its network with operations based in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Isle of Man, and Orkney. With plans to open a new base in Southampton, more engineering roles will soon become available.

Steven Reid’s Commitment

Steven Reid, Engineering Maintenance Manager at Loganair, noted:

Quote: “We offer a fantastic apprentice programme at Loganair… Helping our apprentices reach their potential speaks volumes about our commitment to the industry.”
