Record Highs for Hotel Stays in Japan for Two Consecutive Years
Japan's hotel industry has exceeded previous records for accommodation stays, fueled by rising inbound tourism.
The Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) announced a noteworthy milestone this February, revealing that the amount of hotel stays and other accommodations within the country reached unprecedented heights in 2024. This marks the second consecutive year of substantial growth in Japan’s hospitality sector.
This remarkable trend is largely credited to the boost in inbound tourism.
Key statistics from 2024
- The total number of individuals utilizing accommodations in Japan rose by 5.3%, totaling 650.28 million.
- The country also saw a 38.9% increase in foreign visitors, summing up to 163.6 million arrivals by the year-end.
- Notably, there was a slight decrease of 2.6% in bookings from domestic travelers in both hotels and traditional ryokan inns.
Among major urban areas, Tokyo recorded the highest number of hotel occupancy, followed by Osaka and Hokkaido. The Ibaraki Prefecture noted the most significant increase in foreign arrivals, escalating by 36%.
It was observed that 70% of reservations from foreign guests were predominantly in Japan’s three largest metropolitan regions: Tokyo, Aichi, and Osaka.
