Virgin Australia has demonstrated remarkable performance in the aviation sector, leading the other major Australian airlines in on-time performance (OTP). Recent statistics from the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) reveal that the airline completed 99.2% of scheduled domestic flights in January and achieved a departure OTP of 78%, which is superior to its competitors.
Exceptional Reliability & Performance
Virgin Australia’s completion rate not only exceeds the long-term average of 97.8% for Australian domestic carriers but is also closing in on the long-term OTP average of 80.7%. Chief Operations Officer, Stuart Aggs, attributes this achievement to the diligence of the airline’s team, especially during peak travel periods.
“Reliability is incredibly important to our guests, especially when they are travelling to see family and friends,” Stuart Aggs stated. “We call it SPOT – safely performing on time – and our team takes this responsibility seriously. It’s rewarding to see their hard work paying off.”

Strategies for Continued Success
Aside from enhancing its on-time performance, Virgin Australia has maintained a completion rate of over 99% for domestic flights during December and January. This success is attributed to strategies such as having extra aircraft on standby and additional crew members available to reduce the impact of potential disruptions, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
Outstanding Holiday Travel Achievement
The end-of-year holidays brought the airline’s best performance metrics in two years with over 3.8 million travelers flying with Virgin Australia during this period. Additionally, the airline took proactive measures to accommodate Rex customers without cost after Rex suspended jet operations in July 2024, thereby facilitating travel for over 135,000 formerly Rex passengers.
As Virgin Australia continues its leadership in punctuality and flight completion, travelers can anticipate a reliably high-quality travel experience.
