Significant Coral Reef Restoration Dialogue Held at Soneva Fushi

A dialogue on coral reef restoration gathered experts to address the urgent need for innovative solutions in the Maldives.

Recognizing the urgent plight of coral reefs globally, the Soneva Foundation Coral Restoration programme convened a significant dialogue from January 9-12, 2025, at Soneva Fushi in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The event brought together leading coral scientists and marine conservationists to create transformative solutions for reef restoration worldwide.

Exploring the Impact of Climate Change

The three-day dialogue, co-facilitated by Professor Callum Roberts from the University of Exeter and Karen Sack, Executive Director of the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA), focused on climate change’s effects on coral ecosystems. It also highlighted innovative restoration techniques being trialed at Soneva Fushi and beyond.

A Call for Swift and Large-Scale Action

The event concluded with a joint declaration stressing the necessity for immediate and expansive action. International experts suggested innovative financial mechanisms, such as blue bonds and insurance models, to secure the resources needed for coral reef regeneration. Without urgent measures, the world risks losing most tropical coral reefs within decades.

Expert Opinions

Professor Callum Roberts stated: “Scientific research and practical experience indicate that now is the time for a shift in focus from restoration to regeneration. This should combine resource-intensive local projects with large-scale ocean management to foster reef recovery.”

In her remarks, Karen Sack added, “Corals are in crisis worldwide. To save them at any scale, we need to rapidly advance regeneration efforts, which requires increased financial support.”

Ongoing Efforts and Future Plans

Dr. Johanna Leonhardt, lead scientist of the Soneva Foundation, remarked, “Despite the tragic impacts of marine heatwaves, we are determined to regenerate resilient corals. Our initiatives include a coral spawning lab and outplanting efforts.”

The dialogue underscored the alarming rate of coral cover loss, reinforcing the need for innovative approaches to sustain reef resilience against climate threats. The commitment to bold financing strategies is essential for the regeneration of these vital ecosystems.

Looking Ahead

The Soneva Dialogue sets a stage for global cooperation and innovative strategies to protect and regenerate coral reefs, ensuring the preservation of these critical ecosystems for future generations.
