Exploring the Comfort of Cathay Pacific's A350 Premium Economy

A thorough review of the Cathay Pacific's long-haul premium economy service after two extensive flights.

I thoroughly enjoy discussing long-haul premium economy travel. It ultimately comes down to whether the experience feels like a slight upgrade from economy or more akin to business class. Features that lighten the cramped environment of economy class cater to the initial idea of premium economy, while certain offerings elevate it enough to make a dedicated effort to book that service.

We evaluated Cathay Pacific’s long-haul premium economy over two flights aboard their Airbus A350. This fleet is renowned for enduring long travel durations, encompassing a flight from New York to Hong Kong, connecting onward to Sydney, totaling over 25 hours in-flight.

What were our impressions after enduring these extensive flights? Continue reading to discover our insights, along with plenty of videos featuring special cameras capturing the essence of the journey.

Overview of the Experience

From the start, Cathay offered a distinct experience, beginning at check-in. The premium economy cabin accommodates 32 passengers across four rows in a spacious 2-4-2 layout, with a dedicated lavatory distinct from economy.

Comfort and Features

The cabin features modern furnishings and a 12-inch display, larger than those on other aircraft, and comes equipped with amenities to enhance the passenger experience, including welcome drinks served in glassware — a touch reminiscent of business class.

Dining Experience

Upon takeoff, the service provided beverages followed by a meal service. While the culinary experience was satisfying with high-quality meals served, some aspects felt reminiscent of economy class, such as the use of paper cups.

Conclusion

The journey from New York to Hong Kong was lengthy but surprisingly enjoyable in Cathay Pacific’s premium economy. While there were minor drawbacks in service, overall, the cabin’s quality, along with excellent entertainment options and ambient comfort, made the flight worthwhile. Cathay continues to innovate, recently unveiling a new premium economy seat set to launch on their 777-300ER fleet.
