Japan Sees 40.6% Increase in Foreign Visitors in January 2025

Japan reported a remarkable rise in international arrivals, primarily driven by Chinese tourists due to the Lunar New Year celebrations.

Japan reported a 40.6% increase in the number of foreign visitors for January 2025.

In the report released by the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO), this marks the sharpest rise in foreign arrivals in six months. The surge was driven by a greater number of travelers from Hong Kong and Taiwan.

In January 2025, approximately 980,300 Chinese nationals visited Japan, a 50% increase from 416,088 in January 2024. The increase in flights between China and Japan coincided with the Lunar New Year.

Key demographics for January 2025:

  • South Korea: 967,100 visitors (+12.8%)
  • Taiwan: 593,400 visitors (+20.5%)
  • Hong Kong: 243,700 visitors (+30.8%)
  • Australia: 140,200 visitors (+35.3%)
  • United States: 182,500 visitors (+38.4%)

Despite the concerns about overtourism, the Japanese government aims to attract 60 million foreign visitors annually by 2030.
